Let glasgow flourish

the glasgow coat of arms

20th April- 27th May 2026

It can be said the history of the Glasgow Coat of Arms is the history of the city itself. Originally from the stories of St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint, for hundreds of years the emblem has seen additions, omissions and adaptations of the bird, tree, bell and fish. Those symbols survived the Reformation, through the Industrial Revolution, into the twentieth century and now, in the twenty-first, we’re still seeing new versions appear.

These changes illustrate many aspects of Glasgow history. Visible, as it is, across the religious, political, commercial, industrial and, of course, football histories of the city, there are many stories to be told and themes to be uncovered including economic and political change, identity and sanctuary.

The pictures in the exhibition have been contributed by Glaswegians – old and new – with either their own take on a familiar, historic version of the City arms or fresh, original designs.

Within today’s ‘everywhere townscapes’ it’s good to remember we’re unique!"

The exhibition has been developed by Dr Caroline Scott.
